Background and Areas of Expertise:

Dan Phillips, an Executive in Residence sponsored by the College of Management and the Venture Development Center, focuses on the following initiatives for UMass Boston:

• Joint collaboration between UMass Boston and the venture capital backed start up community to establish UMass Boston as a significant producer of employees for the venture capital backed, start up company workforce in the Boston area.

• Guest lecturing and providing other guest lecturers for UMass Boston's entrepreneurial and technology oriented classes.

• Mentoring student and faculty based start up business endeavors.

• Funding and supporting the Phillips Scholarship/Mentor program.

Dan's background includes spending the last 25 years as an executive with four venture capital backed software companies.  Two of these companies achieved successful initial public offerings (IPO's) on NASDAQ and two were acquired by Fortune 200 companies.  Dan was the COO of Concord Communications which attained an $800,000,000 market capitalization.  Most recently he was the CEO of Silverback Technologies which was acquired by Dell Inc.

Concurrently over the last 15 years Dan has self funded his own Scholarship/Mentor program for UMass Boston students where he has helped fund the tuition and fees for UMass Boston students.
