College of Management Pass/Fail Policy

The University allows students to take one course each semester on a pass/fail basis, up to a maximum of eight. (Mandatory pass/fail courses do not count toward this limit.) If the course is successfully completed, a grade of "P" will be earned and the course will be counted toward the graduation requirements, but it will not affect the cumulative grade point average. The grade of "F" will count as a failure.

A “pass” grade means successful completion of a course, but it doesn’t count toward the cumulative G.P.A. In the College of Management, the pass/fail option is limited to general education distribution courses, the diversity course, the international management course, the 200-level non-business courses, non-business elective courses and free elective courses ONLY. All other courses that students take (the non-business foundation, the writing proficiency requirement, the business foundation, the management core and concentration courses) must be taken for letter grades. To enroll in a course on pass/fail basis, follow the instructions in the Schedule Book. It is important to note that a “pass/fail” selection cannot be cancelled after the published deadline that is printed in the Schedule Book each semester.

MATH 134 REQUIREMENT POLICY

Beginning in FALL 2008, all BSM students will be required to have completed MATH 134 before taking any College of Management courses (AF, MGT, MKT, MSIS) at or above the 300 level.

The College of Management faculty have made this decision not as a means to present a barrier to the BSM degree, but rather to help students get a strong grasp of quantitative skills necessary for success in upper level core and concentration courses.  MATH 134 is currently a degree requirement, however, it will now need to be completed before taking any 300 level CM courses.  MATH 134 will also continue to satisfy the University’s quantitative reasoning requirement for College of Management BSM students. All BSM students are encouraged to enroll in this course, or appropriate pre-requisite courses as determined by your Math Placement Exam results, as soon as possible.

Please note that advanced calculus courses such as MATH 135 and MATH 140 also satisfy the MATH 134 requirement.

College of Management Dean’s List Criteria

Dean’s List is an honor that is given each fall and spring semester to students who demonstrate superior performance in all of their courses for that term. The Dean’s List honor is noted on the student’s transcript for that term and a reception is held by the College to celebrate this success.

As of Spring 2006, the criteria for being on the College of Management Dean’s List will be:

  • A minimum of two courses in that semester
  • A semester GPA of 3.60 or higher
  • No incompletes for that term on the student record

These criteria must be met by the end of the grading period for that semester to be placed on the Dean’s List.

Non-Management and Non-Degree Students Registering for Management Courses

Effective Spring 2009, non-management students may take up to 18 credits (6 courses) in the College of Management. These six courses are limited to the following choices:

AF 210: Financial Accounting
AF 301: Financial Management

Note: Non-CM students will be able to take this course only if AF 211 was completed at UMB prior to spring 2009, or if transfer credit was awarded for AF 211 prior to enrolling at UMB. All other pre-requisites must be met.

BC 230: Fundamentals of Business Communication and Critical Analysis
BC 290: Professional Written Communication and Critical Analysis

Note: Students must take the CMWA and get a placement result of BC 290 to take this course. All other pre-requisites must be met.

MGT 303: Managing Organizations
MKT 301: Principles of Marketing
MSIS 110: Introduction to Computers and Information Systems
MSIS 212: Managerial Decision Making

Note: Students will no longer be able to take MSIS 111 prior to MSIS 212, however one of the following courses can be taken in place of MSIS 111, and will satisfy the statistics pre-requisite: ECON 205, MATH 125, PSYCH 270, SOCIOL 350.

Note: ALL pre-requisites for the courses must be met before registration can be processed.

Please consult the current University Schedule of Courses, or see below, for the dates that non-management students are eligible to register.

Non-management, degree seeking students at UMass Boston can self register for AF 210, BC 230 and MSIS 110 as long as all pre-requisites have been met. All other CM courses must be requested on a Registration Request Form. This form must be submitted to the College of Management Undergraduate Program Office (M-5-603), where it will be reviewed. If approved, you will be added to the course.

  • Registration for non-management degree students for Spring 2010 begins on January 11, 2010.
  • Registration for non- degree students for Spring 2010 begins on January 19, 2010.

Non-Degree students must also complete a Registration Request Form. You will also need to supply a copy of your past transcripts that indicate the credits completed to date and note completed pre-requisite courses. In addition, you must supply a course description and/or syllabus of the pre-requisite courses that have been completed to date. In addition to seeking this approval in the College of Management, you will also need to have a student record set up by the Division of Corporate, Continuing and Distance Education (CCDE) - they can be reached at 617-287-7900. They will supply you with a student ID number, which you must also put on your CM Registration Request Form.

For example, if you are a non-degree student and want to take AF 211, Managerial Accounting at UMass Boston, you would need to show a transcript that states you’ve completed 30 credits and the equivalent of our Financial Accounting course; you will also need to show us a course description of that equivalent course. This will allow the College to verify that the pre-requisites have been met and can grant you permission to take the course here.

Once you submit that information, it will be reviewed, and if approved, you will be added to the course. If you have additional questions, please call the Undergraduate Program Office at 617-287-7760 to get more information.
