REGISTRATION NOTES AND UPDATES
Spring and Winter registration is right around the corner!

Wiser term code = 1920
Monday, November 2, 2009 Spring 2010 Registration Begins
Wiser term code = 1930
The University is no longer producing the printed schedule book for registration. Instead, you can access a version of the book you are accustomed to seeing through a PDF link:
www.umb.edu/students/registrar/documents/ScheduleSpring2010.pdf
If you plan to print this, please consider printing only the pages you will actually need to look at. There is a lot of information in the book that most CM undergrads never use. However, as always, the best way to see what is available is to look on Wiser directly. Since the schedule book was prepared, there have been three course changes in the College of Management alone!
College of Management students who have fewer than 60 credits, are in their first semester in the College, or have not yet declared a concentration are advised in the University Advising Center (UAC). Jim McCarthy and Michael Mahan are the two advisors who work primarily with CM students, however during registration advising, you can see any advisor in the UAC. College of Management students who have declared a concentration are advised in the CM Undergraduate Program Office (advising hours at the end of this newsletter).
To prepare for an advising session, you are strongly encouraged to visit this site, which contains valuable information and tips for concentrators and non-concentrators alike. www.uac.umb.edu/ontrack/preparing.php
As always, there is a grace period where CM classes are open to CM students ONLY – and you are encouraged to register before non-CM students have access to these classes as well. Non CM and non-degree registration periods are:
January 11 Spring 2010 registration begins for non-CM students
January 19 Spring 2010 registration begins for non-degree students
The College of Management does not offer any courses over the winter session.
All registration is on a first come, first served basis, providing that all pre-requisites are met. This applies to CM and non-CM students once the dates above pass. Our classes fill up fast – so register early!
Registering for MGT 490?
You must complete a registration card in the CM Undergraduate Program Office (M-5-603) – you will not be able to self register. If you are in the MAP program, you must have 75% of your required miles earned, and meet all of the course pre-requisites before taking this class. There is no way for us to predict if or how many seats will be available, so please watch your Wiser account for updates.
Registering for BC 230 or BC 290?
A writing assessment (the CMWA) is once again required of all students interested in taking BC 290. Please see more details below.
Hopefully these updates and tips will lead you through as successful registration process!
COLLEGE OF MANAGEMENT WRITING ASSESSMENT FOR BC 290 REGISTRATION
All students who have not completed BC 290 must take an assessment test to determine proper placement into BC courses. The assessment test will determine whether a student can register for BC 230 or BC 290. Both courses address the integration of managerial communication and critical analysis. BC 230 is a more intensive preparation for the challenges of BC 290.
For more information, including test dates, registration procedures and a sample test, please see this web site:
http://www.management.umb.edu/undergrad/undergrad_cmwa.php
WHO DO I SEE FOR THAT?
Do you need an Advising Hold removed?
See the University Advising Center
Have you declared a concentration and need advising?
You can see an advisor in the CM Undergraduate Program Office (M-5-603), or one of the faculty advisors in your concentration: www.management.umb.edu/undergrad/undergrad_academic_advising.php
Are you an Information Technology Major with advising questions?
You can see the University Advising Center (especially good with your general education requirements); an IT professor (Professor Kuilboer in CM can be helpful); Professor Campbell, the IT Program Director (he’s in CSM but works with all IT students); the CM Undergraduate Program Office.
Need to register for MGT 490 or BC 290?
Complete a registration request card in the CM Undergraduate Program Office.
Want to take a credit overload (more than 17 credits)?
Complete the Credit Overload request form: www.management.umb.edu/undergrad/undergrad_forms.php or on CMWeb and turn it into the CM Undergraduate Program Office.
Do you need to discuss a policy exception (repeating a course, taking a course without the pr-requisites, etc.)?
Plan to see Amy Mei during walk-in hours, or contact her via email.
Do you want to get an internship?
Stop by the College of Management Career Center (M-5-427) to see Tom Patria to get started.
Are you planning to sign up for the internship class and get credit for the internship?
Once you have an internship, and want course credit for it, complete the Internship Course Registration Form found here: http://www.management.umb.edu/undergrad/undergrad_forms.php or in the CM offices. Submit it, along with all the necessary paperwork to Tom Patria, then to the CM undergraduate Program Office for approval and registration.
Interested in taking a course off campus?
Complete the Undergraduate Transfer Waiver form found here: www.umb.edu/students/registrar/forms/index.html - don’t forget to read the instructions too!
Do you want to have a business transfer course looked at for equivalency?
Stop into the CM Undergraduate Program Office for the Transfer Credit Evaluation Form, submit it along with course descriptions (or syllabi if it’s an accounting or finance course) and we’ll determine if it should have a new or different equivalency.
Think a non-business class should be equivalent to something else or considered as a 200 level course?
See the department that the course relates to for re-evaluation. Non-CM classes can’t be changed or re-evaluated in CM, you must go to the respective department for that.
TAKE NOTE
The last day to withdraw from a course or change to the Pass/Fail option for the Fall 2009 semester is Thursday, November 12.
YOUR DEGREE AUDIT: Check it Early – Check it often!
If you think courses aren’t appearing where they once did, or it doesn’t look quite right – bring it to the One Stop, where they can fix programming errors.
If you need help interpreting the audit, see an advisor.
Your audit is the way the University tracks your progress, not through check sheets or other methods – so make sure there are no surprises on your audit.
CONCENTRATION DECLARATION DATES
Management majors can declare a concentration during one of the following time periods:
January 1 – March 1 or June 1 – October 1
To declare a concentration, students need to complete a Concentration Declaration From which can be found in the CM Undergraduate Program Office, on the CM website (www.management.umb.edu/undergrad/undergrad_forms.php) or on CMWeb. Forms will not be accepted or processed until the next concentration declaration period opens.
MATH 134 POLICY REMINDER: Effective Fall 2008
Beginning in FALL 2008, all CM students will be required to have completed MATH 134 before taking any College of Management courses (AF, MGT, MKT, MSIS) at or above the 300 level.
The College of Management faculty have made this decision not as a means to present a barrier to the degree, but rather to help students get a strong grasp of quantitative skills necessary for success in upper level core and concentration courses. MATH 134 is currently a degree requirement, however, it will now need to be completed before taking any 300 level CM courses. MATH 134 will also continue to satisfy the University’s quantitative reasoning requirement for College of Management students. All CM students are encouraged to enroll in this course, or appropriate pre-requisite courses as determined by your Math Placement Exam results, as soon as possible.
Please note that advanced calculus courses such as MATH 135 and MATH 140 also satisfy the MATH 134 requirement.
Math Policy Q&A:
I am afraid that I will not be able to complete MATH 134 before I would like to take 300 level courses in CM. Can I do anything about this?
Yes. We understand that some College of Management students will need to take algebra, pre-calculus, or other preparatory math classes before MATH 134. You will not be penalized for needing these pre-requisite courses. As long as you start taking the necessary math courses (as indicated by the MPE), and continue taking them until you complete MATH 134, you will be able to take 300 level courses in CM at the same time as any required pre-requisite MATH courses. It is important that we see that you are continuously working on the math courses each semester, until MATH 134 is complete. If you are in this situation, you may need registration assistance for some upper level CM courses – please contact the College of Management Undergraduate Program Office (M-5-603 or 617-287-7760).
More information regarding this policy, including frequently asked questions can be found in the College of Management Undergraduate Program Office.
Information about the Math Placement Exam is found here: http://www.uac.umb.edu/testing/math/

GRADUATION APPLICATION DATES
If you have more than 80 credits, you’ve probably seen a note regarding graduation application dates on your degree audit. As a reminder, those dates are:
| GRADUATION DATE |
DEADLINE DATE |
| December 2009 |
November 6, 2009 |
| June 2010 |
February 12, 2010 |
| August 2010 |
March 5, 2010 |
You can apply for graduation on Wiser or in the Registrar’s Office. If you miss a deadline, it is highly likely that you will need to declare the next graduation period, which would cause a delay in receiving your diploma.
THE MANAGEMENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM
The Management Achievement Program schedule for Fall 2009 is now available:
http://www.management.umb.edu/undergrad/undergrad_map.php
